The project for Specialized Bicycles, Browns Barn, Citywest, Co. Dublin comprised of the conversion and refurbishment of a Bar/Restaurant Building known as “Browns Barn” to a specialist retail bicycle shop.  The existing Building was formerly known as the Royal Garter Stables dating from 1800 and was used as a stable for the horse and carriage business set up by Charles Bianconi.

The interior refurbishment consisted of upgrading the courtyard to form a landscaped entrance forecourt, new patinated copper clad and curtain wall entrance to the Retail area, removal of existing lift and stairwells and provision of new corteen steel clad external stairs and provision of new internal exposed concrete stairs.  The internal bar fittings and enclosures were removed to provide open and contemporary retail spaces at Ground and First Floor along with office areas and staff facilities.

Materiality consists of contemporary finishes – exposed concrete and oak floors, frameless glazing, exposed services, steel and stone counters, exposed concrete and stainless steel, while at all times respecting and enhancing the existing finishes of the protected structure.

The project is a vibrant new use of a historic building, which has had many uses over the years and provides an exciting and dynamic retail space for Specialized.
